The accident happened on Easdale Island, near Oban
An 11-year-old boy has died after apparently being swept out to sea near his home on a Scottish island.

Jonathan Laycock was playing alone on rocks on Easdale Island, near Oban, when the accident happened on Tuesday evening.

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said the youngster was rescued from the Firth of Lorn at about 1930BST on Tuesday.

He was taken to Lorn and Islands District General Hospital in Oban where he later died.

Relatives informed

The spokeswoman said: "It is very difficult to know how long the boy had been in the water because he was alone and we do not know when he would have entered the water.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this incident and his relatives are aware."

Apost-mortem examination will be carried out on to determine the exact cause of death.

A report will also be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
