Briton jailed over summit riot
![]() The violence caused millions of pounds of damage
A Briton thought by Swedish police to have orchestrated violence at last month's Gothenburg summit has been jailed for a year.
Librarian Paul Robinson, 32, was also fined 500 crowns - around £30 - after being found guilty of violent rioting during the European Union meeting.
Robinson injured and arrested on Friday 15 June as police fought running battles with anarchists, anti-globalists and other protesters. At one stage Swedish officers, apparently overwhelmed by the scale of the disturbances, opened fire with live ammunition, shooting three protesters. Video evidence One of those shot, a German teenager, was later jailed for six months for his part in the unrest. Robinson, from Camden, north London, went on trial last week at Gothenburg Court before a judge and three magistrates. They reserved judgment until Wednesday after hearing from the police officers who arrested him and watching a video showing the Briton throwing stones. He will serve a minimum of two thirds of his prison sentence, not including time spent on remand, before being deported from Sweden, according to a spokesman for the British Embassy. Entry ban Robinson will also be banned from entering Sweden for five years after he is deported. Robinson's parents, who live in Manchester, said they had heard about the verdict but refused to comment further. Their son's sentencing came the same day as it was announced diplomats had been granted access to five Britons arrested after last week's riots at the G8 summit in Genoa. Campaigners had complained they were being held in conditions that breached their human rights, amid allegations of police beatings.
