A security cordon surrounds Lurgan RUC station
A crude bomb has been made safe inside the grounds of a County Armagh police station.

Army bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on the device which was found just inside the perimeter fence of the RUC station at Lurgan.

It is thought the bomb was thrown over the fence at the station on Church Street on Monday night.

The search for a device followed a number of telephone warnings on Wednesday.

A police spokesman said someone could have been killed if the bomb had exploded.

RUC District Commander, Superintendent Ian Chapman, said: "This was a reckless attack on the men and women under my command.

"It was carried out by terrorists who recklessly endangered more the lives of any passer-by than any police officer."

The police have appealed for anyone in the North Street area of the town between 2300 BST on Monday night and the early hours of Tuesday morning to contact them.

A security operation around the police station is continuing.
