West Midlands Police are investigating the attempted murder of a motorcycle officer on duty in Birmingham.

Police say 36-year-old Neil Taylor was deliberately run over on Tuesday night in the Winson Green area of the city.

PC Taylor had driven towards two cars parked side by side in Clissold Street with his blue light flashing.

A silver-grey Rover drove off but a light blue Volkswagen Sirocco reversed, did a three-point turn and then drove straight into the officer.

The force of the impact carried the motorbike onto the bonnet of the car, throwing PC Taylor to the ground.

The bike then landed on top of him, pinning him to the ground.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital suffering neck and leg injuries.

PC Taylor was treated in hospital but is recovering at home on Wednesday.

Police say that three black males in their early 20s were inside the Volkswagen Scirroco. The driver had short, cropped hair.

Door-to-door enquiries are being carried out and scenes of crimes officers have been in the area examining the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Malcolm Coall said: "We are treating this incident as attempted murder - the officer could have suffered far worse injuries.

"He was highly visible in his uniform and his illuminated police bike and it seems that the vehicle deliberately drove towards him and failed to stop."

He added: "It was still light when the incident happened and there were people about in the area so we would urge people to come forward with any information they have."
