Foot-and-mouth disease

Inquiry into farm virus 'scam'
Following allegations from a Welsh farmer, government officials investigate claims that some farmers may be deliberately infecting their flocks with foot-and-mouth disease to qualify for compensation.

Mass cull on Brecon Beacons
Thousands of sheep on the Brecon Beacons have been culled in an attempt to prevent further spread of foot-and-mouth. Tests on herds in five separate areas of the mountains all found animals that had been in contact with the disease, raising fears about how much further it may have spread.

Clean-up operation suspended
Ministers defended their decision to suspend the clean-up of farms in England and Wales affected by foot-and-mouth. Downing Street ordered a review after finding out the cost was averaging more than £100,000 per farm. The BBC's Kevin Bocquet reports.
22 July 2001 Epidemic warning
The RSPCA warned of a possible epidemic of foot and mouth disease by the autumn. It accused the government of "catastrophic" mismanagement in the way it has carried out screening for the virus. Meanwhile, testing began on ten thousand sheep on the Brecon Beacons in Wales. The BBC's Wyre Davies reports.

Pig farms affected in North Yorkshire
The disease begins to threaten pig-farming areas around Thirsk in North Yorkshire which had previously been free of the disease. Foot-and-mouth in pigs is hundreds of times more infectious. The BBC's Richard Bilton reports.

New outbreak warning from UK's Chief Scientist
The Government's Chief Scientist, Professor David King, warned that if the foot-and-mouth virus is not eradicated by the autumn, it could break out again and spread across the countryside. Thousands of videos are being sent to farmers reminding them that they should continue to take precautions. The BBC's Tom Heap reports
