Hefted sheep on the Brecon Beacons have been specially bred for local conditions

Thousands of sheep on the Brecon Beacons have been culled in an attempt to prevent further spread of foot-and-mouth. Tests on herds in five separate areas of the mountains all found animals that had been in contact with the disease, raising fears about how much further it may have spread.

The disease begins to threaten pig-farming areas around Thirsk in North Yorkshire which had previously been free of the disease. Foot-and-mouth in pigs is hundreds of times more infectious. The BBC's Richard Bilton reports.
