Indian police kill militant chief
Police in Indian-administered Kashmir say they have killed Abdul Hamid Tantray, the deputy head of the dominant Hizbul Mujahideen group.
They say he was involved in a clash with a special police task force in the Pulwama district, south of the capital, Srinagar, and was shot dead on Tuesday night. The guerrilla chief, who was also known as commander Masud, played a leading role in initiating peace talks with the Indian government a year ago. A summit between India and Pakistan failed to resolve the dispute over Kashmir earlier this month. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
