Schools step up drugs fight

A new strategy has been developed
Most Scottish pupils are now said to be getting lessons on the dangers of drugs.

A survey carried out by the Scottish Council for Research in Education showed 97% of schools offered lessons on the subject.

A drugs action plan was published last year and contained a number of measures setting out how the Scottish Executive would play its part in eradicating drug culture.

Jack McConnell said schools were rising to the challenge

It set aside £27m for a partnership between government initiatives and drug action teams within communities.

The executive has called on all schools to provide drug education and have procedures in place to deal with drug misuse by 2002.

The Education Minister, Jack McConnell, congratulated North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire councils which have already achieved the target.

Commenting on the figures, he said: "Our aim is to help young people resist drug misuse in order to reach their full potential in society.

"To do this, it is essential that we provide young people with the information they need to enable them to make sensible and informed choices and develop sound lifestyles and healthy living.

"Drug education is, of course, not only about controlled drugs but also covers all substances from the safe use of medicines through to alcohol, tobacco and solvents."

'Rising to challenge'

The minister said: "We will be working with authorities to ensure that, next year, all schools can report the same level of achievement.

"I am determined to ensure that the target is met by all local authorities.

"The results of the drug survey are an encouraging step forward and show that progress is being made towards meeting the targets outlined in the executive's drug action plan.

"They are a clear indicator that schools are rising to the challenge."
