New sultan appointed in Niger
State radio in Niger says the government has appointed a new Sultan of Zinder - one of the country's most powerful traditional chiefs - following the recent sacking of Elhadj Aboubacar Sanda. The new leader was named as Elhadj Mamadou Moustapha. Last month, the former sultan was removed from the post, which he'd held for 20 years, after being accused of plotting to overthrow the government and drug-trafficking. He's currently being held in detention in the capital, Niamey. His dismissal prompted big protests in Niamey. Traditional chiefs have expressed their support for Elhadj Aboubacar Sanda.
