Three years for baby killer
Court graphic
An 18-year-old heroin user who shook a crying baby to death has been given three years detention.

Jonathan Murdoch, from Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, had been babysitting the nine-month-old boy while his mother visited her boyfriend.

Murdoch had pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Jack Betts, on 8 February this year, but denied murder.

He had been sleeping on a settee at the home of Deborah Betts in Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Nottingham Crown Court heard that they had both taken heroin that evening.

In the early hours of the morning, Murdoch was woken by the baby crying.

The court was told he lost his temper and shook the child but then took it round to a neighbour's house where the emergency services were called .
