Zimbabwe opposition convoy attacked

Police in Zimbabwe say several people were injured yesterday during clashes between rival political supporters in the northern constituency of Bindura where a parliamentary by-election is being held next week.

The trouble is said to have started when about 100 supporters of the ruling Zanu-PF party attacked a convoy of cars carrying the visiting opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai who heads the Movement for Democratic Change.

Local newspapers said one of the cars was set alight and there was a brief exchange of gunfire between rival supporters.

Mr Tsvangirai escaped unhurt and went on to address a rally nearby. The Bindura seat fell vacant in April following the death of a Zanu-PF minister, Border Gezi, in a car accident .
