Record unemployment in Taiwan
A record number of people are now out of work in Taiwan.
Figures released for June show that the unemployment rate now stands at its highest recorded level - just over 4.5%. Taiwan's economy has been hit by a global slump in demand for electronic goods and computer and communications technology. The government says the jobless rate could rise further in the coming months, but it hopes economic prospects will improve by the end of the year. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
