Arrests at G8 death protest
![]() Protests were sparked by the killing of a demonstrator
Three people have been arrested during demonstrations outside the Italian Embassy in London over the killing of an anti-capitalist protester at the G8 summit in Genoa.
Windows were smashed and graffiti daubed at the nearby Canadian High Commission when a crowd of 150 protesters gathered in Mayfair's Davies Street and Grovesnor Square on Sunday. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said officers arrived at about 1900BST and formed a cordon around protesters.
The spokesman said: "All the protesters had dispersed by 10pm. There were no reports of any injuries." The protest was prompted by the death of 23-year-old Italian anti-capitalist protester Carlo Giuliani, shot dead by paramilitary police in Genoa on Friday. International protests Thousands of protesters had gathered in the Italian city hosting the Group of Eight summit. Police fought running battles with rioting anarchists and protesters, and were forced to use tear gas and water canon to protect the fenced "red zone" around the summit headquarters.
The shooting is being investigated and the 20-year Carabinieri conscript who fired the shots could face manslaughter charges. The G8 leaders were united in their condemnation of the riots, saying they could not allow violent protests by a few to derail their talks or future summits. Similar demonstrations to the one in London have also been held outside Italian embassies around the world, including Mexico City, Brussels and Berlin. Anti-capitalist groups say they plan further demonstrations outside the Italian Embassy in London this week.
