Wahid declares state of emergency

Indonesia's President, Abdurrahman Wahid, has declared a state of emergency and called for fresh elections in a year's time.

The dramatic move comes on the eve of hearings to impeach him for corruption in parliament.

Mr Wahid denies corruption, and has called the impeachment process unconstitutional.

It is not clear if Indonesia's military will support the state of emergency.

Around 2,000 soldiers and 70 tanks and armoured vehicles have spent the day outside the palace.

Mr Wahid made the announcement in a televised address to the nation from his presidential palace in Jakarta.
