Uganda rebels' letter welcomed

The authorities in Uganda have welcomed as a positive response, a letter from the rebel Uganda National Rescue Front leader, Major-General Ali Bamuze.

It was in reply to one Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni wrote to the rebel leader last year.

President Museveni's had proposed a peaceful resolution to the 20-year insurgency in the northwest of Uganda.

Correspondents say splits among the National Rescue Front rebels had delayed the rebels' response, the details of which have not been disclosed.
