Russian arms depot fire put out
The Russian Defence Ministry says army firefighters have put out a huge fire that had raged for two days at an army ammunition dump in eastern Siberia, which killed three people. Shards of metal from shells bursting in the flames and unexploded ammunition rained down on nearby villages. Reports say the flying metal hit an area within 15km (nine miles) of the arms dump, which was in the region of Buryatia near the border with Mongolia. The emergency services say hundreds of people who fled their homes have now returned. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
