The mother of a newborn baby girl abandoned near a Gaelic Athletic Association football pitch in Ballymena, County Antrim, has been located.

The infant was discovered at about 2330 BST on Saturday wrapped in a white blanket at Woodside Road after a telephone call from a woman.

The baby was said to be doing well after being taken to hospital.

The police had earlier asked the baby's mother to get in touch with them or Antrim Area Hospital in confidence.

RUC Inspector Deirdre Bones had appealed for information.

"The baby seemed quite alert and quite healthy, or as healthy as you would expect," she said.
