Beijing 2008: elation and concern
A Chinese cyclist passes a vintage Paris Olympics flag
The Chinese public have enthusiastically followed the bid
Unlike the Tory leadership race, the venue for the 2008 summer Olympics was decided on the second ballot.

IOC members meeting in Moscow voted at 1500 BST - considering bids from Toronto, Paris, Istanbul, Turkey and Osaka in Japan.

Osaka was eliminated in round one with six votes. When the votes from round two were counted, China came out well ahead with 56 votes.

Toronto scored 22 votes, Paris, 18 and Istanbul, 9.

BBC correspondents in China described reaction amongst the public as "elated" and "delirious".

Human rights

But Amnesty International claim that China is guilty of human rights abuses and should not have the opportunity to stage the event until their record improves substantially.

We spoke to the Chinese Ambassador in London, Ma Zengang, and Susan Cobrin from Amnesty.
