Lord Shore: Taken ill after speaking in debate

Former Labour Cabinet minister Lord Shore of Stepney is said to have spent a comfortable night in hospital after collapsing in the House of Lords on Thursday.

Lord Shore, who is 77, was taken to St Thomas' Hospital across the Thames from the Houses of Parliament.

A hospital spokeswoman confirmed that the veteran politician remained in a stable condition and was undergoing further medical assessment.

Lord Shore slumped over in his seat on the Privy Council benches shortly after speaking in a debate on monetary policy.

Resuscitation

The Lords sitting was immediately suspended as peers, among them medical consultant Lord Patel, and first aid staff applied resuscitation and an oxygen mask.

As Peter Shore, Lord Shore was a Labour MP in the East End of London for 34 years before standing down in 1997.

He served as trade secretary under Harold Wilson in the 1970s and as environment secretary under Jim Callaghan until Labour lost power in 1979.

The House of Lords continued at 1830BST on Thursday after an adjournment of about 45 minutes.
