Labour veteran Shore collapses in Lords
![]() Lord Shore: Taken ill after speaking in debate
Debate in the House of Lords was suspended after former Labour Cabinet minister Lord Shore of Stepney collapsed.
He slumped over in his seat on the Privy Council benches shortly after speaking in a debate on monetary policy. The sitting was immediately suspended as peers, among them medical consultant Lord Patel, and first aid staff applied resuscitation and an oxygen mask. Lord Shore, who is 77, was taken to St Thomas' Hospital across the Thames from the Houses of Parliament. A hospital spokeswoman confirmed he had been admitted and that he was in a stable condition. As Peter Shore he was a Labour MP in the East End of London for 34 years before standing down in 1997.
He served as trade secretary under Harold Wilson in the 1970s and as environment secretary under Jim Callaghan until Labour lost power in 1979. The House of Lords continued at 1830BST after an adjournment of about 45 minutes.
