Argentine general wanted in Germany

A court in Germany has issued an international arrest warrant for a former Argentine military commander, Carlos Suarez Mason, over the disappearance of a German national in Argentina in 1977.

General Suarez Mason is currently under house arrest in Buenos Aires in connection with a separate probe into the theft of babies from political prisoners during military rule between 1976 and 1983.

Last December, he was sentenced in his absence to life imprisonment by a court in Rome for the abduction and killing of Italian nationals.

Correspondents say even if he is arrested, Argentina is likely to argue that he can only be tried by the Argentine courts for crimes committed at home.
