Army defuses car bomb

The police have said a car bomb left in Cargan, near Ballymena in County Antrim, had the potential to cause loss of life and widespread damage.

They are blaming loyalists for leaving the car bomb in the village.

They said it was a complex device that was abandoned in Cargan for several hours before a warning was received on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, RUC Chief Superintendent Bob Foster appealed for anyone who saw the Passat car being parked in the village to contact detectives.

A number of homes were evacuated after the vehicle was found abandoned outside a pub following a telephone warning on Tuesday.

The device was later defused by Army bomb disposal experts.
