Malawi seeks crocodile killers

The authorities in Malawi are seeking twenty hunters who will be given permission to kill two-hundred crocodiles in various parts of the country.

The Minister for Environmental Affairs and Natural Resources, Harry Thomson, said the government had decided to cull the crocodiles after repeated attacks on local people along river banks and on Lake Malawi.

Although the crocodiles are an endangered species, Mr Thomson said that the government had to choose between crocodiles and people.

Each hunter will be allowed to kill twenty crocodiles at ten designated sites.

Police say that during the rainy season, they receive at least two reports a day of crocodile attacks.
