US embassy bomber avoids death penalty
Breaking News
Tanzanian Khalfan Khamis Mohamed has been sentenced in New York to life in prison for the 1998 bombing of the US embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Mohamed, 27, was convicted of conspiracy last month for the bombing which killed 11 people.

The same Manhattan jury convicted three others in May of conspiring with exiled Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden to kill Americans in the twin bombings of the US embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam.

The two explosions killed 224 people, including 12 Americans, and injured more than 4,000 others.

Last month, the same jury could not agree on whether to impose the death penalty against another defendant, Mohamed Rashid Daoud al-Owhali, for his role in the Nairobi attack.

The deadlock effectively sentenced al-Owhali to life in prison.
