First round results from the Tory Leadership Contest
The First round results are in for the race for Tory leader
The First round results are in for the race for Tory leader
There ARE NO victims!

A tie at the bottom of the Tory Leadership race has resulted in the ballot being repeated on Thursday.

Just after half past five, in one of the Commons' Committee rooms, the Chairman of the 1922 committee, Sir Michael Spicer, announced the result of the first round ballot:

The full result was: Michael Ancram 21; Kenneth Clarke 36; David Davis 21; Iain Duncan Smith 39; Michael Portillo 49. All 166 Conservative MPs voted.

All candidates will now endure another ballot on Thursday along the same lines as today's, which will then reduce the field to two contenders.

Nobody has been eliminated: leaving the same five men still fighting for the leadership they will endure another ballot on Thursday.. along the same lines as today's, which will HOPEFULLY narrow the field.

Then and only then, do the party grassroots get their chance to choose which of the two will be the person to fill William Hague's shoes and lead the party in a fresh direction in the 21st century.

That won't happen until September 12th.

Listen to the PM discussion from the candidates supporters: Andrew Mitchell from David Davis's campaign, Kenneth Clarkes supporter John Greenway, Eric Pickles from Iain Duncan-Smith's leadership team and Tim Collins who is supporting Michael Ancram's leadership bid all discuss tonights result with Clare English.
