Mexican police probe shooting

The authorities in Mexico are investigating whether the shooting of a police chief and his assistant on Monday in the northern border town of Matamoros may have been linked to drug-traffickers.

Both men died instantly when they were shot while sitting in their car.

The police chief, Jaime Yanez, is reported to have led the capture of a suspected bodyguard of the Mexican drug baron, Osiel Cardenas, at the end of last week.

Television reports say Mr Yanez had previously received death threats for not cooperating with drug-traffickers.
