Israeli water warning

An Israeli Health Ministry official has said that tap water in the whole of the Tel Aviv region is unfit to drink following a recent pollution problem.

The official, Alex Levental, said that residents in the region should not drink tap water until otherwise advised.

Later, officials announced that most areas could use tap water after it was boiled.

The warning affects more than a millon people.

The Health Ministry says that several possible causes of the contamination are being investigated, including a burst sewage pipe, and possible contamination by fertilisers.

It said the possibility of sabotage had not been ruled out.
