Mass jail break in Sao Paulo
The authorities in Brazil say they've recaptured 35 of the 105 prisoners who escaped from the country's largest jail on Sunday, using a tunnel linked to the sewer system. An investigation has begun into how the tunnel was built and whether the inmates had help from prison guards. The escapees are thought to be members of a criminal gang which organised a rebellion last February involving thousands of inmates. In 1992, Carandiru was the scene of the country's worst prison massacre, when armed riot police stormed the building to quell an uprising. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
