Police investigating the murder of a teenage girl in South Yorkshire are questioning a 19-year-old man.

The girl's body was found in a field just off St.John's Road in Swinton, near Rotherham, late on Sunday night.

Police and paramedics made the discovery after responding to a 999 call.

The identity of the girl has not yet been released.

The man who has been arrested is being questioned at Rotherham police station.

Head injuries

A post-mortem examination is being carried out to try to establish the cause of death, although detectives have revealed the girl had head injuries.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: "The body was that of a young girl aged about 16.

"Initial signs are that the death is suspicious."

A special incident room has been set up at Wath police station.

Officers have appealed for anyone with information about the death to come forward.
