Slovakia regrets Roma killing
The Slovakian Government has expressed its deep regret for the violent death of a Roma man in police custody last week. Reports say the man Karol Sendrei was beaten to death at a police station in central Slovakia. The government said it had taken immediate action to clarify the case and bring the perpetrators to justice. It also promised measures to restore public confidence in the police. Slovakia has previously been criticised for its treatment of the Roma minority which makes up around ten percent of the country's population. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
