Thousands of supporters of beleaguered Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid broke into the grounds of parliament after MPs backed a proposal to inaugurate impeachment proceedings against him.

The demonstrators broke through a cordon of heavily-armed police and smashed a gate, but were held away from the main building by more police and troops.
