Former Mexican policeman found dead

A former director of Mexico City's police, who had been accused of having links with alleged drug traffickers, has been found dead in a van in the Mexican capital.

The authorities say the man, Jesus Ignacio Carrola Gutierrez, had been shot in the head, badly beaten, handcuffed and his body showed clear signs of torture.

In 1997 Mr Carrola was forced to resign as director of the capital city's judicial police after being accused of being responsible for alleged human rights violations by police under his command in Baja California.
