Outrage at private parts puppetry
Controversial stage show graphic
Hundreds of residents have called for the banning of a stage show in which men manipulate their genitalia into different shapes.

The act - performed by Australians Simon Morley and David Friend - was sold out weeks in advance of its opening night in Swansea on 11 June.

Puppetry has already been shown at the Edinburgh Festival and in the West End, but its tour to Wales has caused outrage.

I don't look over the manager's shoulder and veto his decisions

But 400 residents have signed petitions calling for the show's night at the Swansea Grand Theatre to be cancelled.

They have written to Swansea County Council, complaining the performance is an "affront to public decency".

During the show, the performers manipulate their genitalia into various shapes, objects and famous landmarks.

But council culture secretary Robert Francis-Davies said the act was part of a balanced seasonal programme, which included ballet and opera.

He admitted some people might not think the show's content was "appropriate", but said he was not prepared to veto the performance.

"The Marriage of Figaro was banned when it first came out because it was regarded as an affront to public morals at the time," he said.

"But the last time I saw it performed at the Grand Theatre it got a standing ovation.

'Offended'

"I know that some people say the show next month is pornographic."

He added: "I don't look over the manager's shoulder and veto his decisions.

"People have the right to go or not go, and if they feel offended they should stay away."

The show was a hit at the Edinburgh Festival last summer and transferred to London's Whitehall Theatre shortly afterwards.

Puppetry is touring 17 other towns and cities in the UK, including Manchester, Birmingham and Plymouth.
