Two arrested after shooting incident

Police said the incident was not related to paramilitaries
Two men have been arrested following an incident in Northern Ireland during which police officers opened fire.

A firearm was recovered following the incident which took place at Hillview Road in the Oldpark area of north Belfast at about 1615 BST on Tuesday.

It is understood several unmarked police cars rammed a red van in which the two men were travelling.

Army bomb experts were called to the scene.

A number of shots were fired by the police and the matter has been referred to the Office of the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman.

Van removed

The incident took place close to a cash and carry store.

Unmarked police cars rammed the van

The Royal Ulster Constabulary cordoned off the road as police officers and forensic scientists carried out an examination of the area.

The police said they did not believe the shooting incident was paramilitary related.

A man sustained what are thought to be minor injuries during the incident.

The police said it was believed he was in a car struck by the vehicle in which the two detained men were travelling.

The red van was later removed from the scene.
