Police quell court anger
Sheriff Court sign
Police used CS spray as trouble flared at Portree Sheriff Court
Police had to intervene at Portree Sheriff Court when members of the public tried to attack a man who was appearing for sentence.

Trouble flared when a man appeared at the court on Skye for sentencing after he admitted possessing indecent photographs of children.

The first incident happened in the Portree courtroom just before 1400BST as Sheriff Noel MacPartlin was about to pass sentence on 35-year-old Nicholas Walker.

Police intervened using CS spray when members of the public tried to attack him.

One man was arrested for breach of the peace.

After an adjournment, Walker, formerly of Kilmuir in Skye but now living in Hertfordshire, was jailed for three months on six charges of taking indecent photographs and fined £1,000 for possession of the images.

Forty minutes later, another disturbance flared in the foyer of Portree police station involving a number of people.

Police say they used CS spray again to bring the situation under control.

Two men were subsequently charged with breach of the peace.
