Elections In Yucatan

Mexicans in the southern state of Yucatan will go to the polls on Sunday, for an election that's being seen as an important test for the Insitutional Revolutionary Party or PRI.

Last year the party lost contol of the Mexican presidency after 70 years in power.

And analysts say if the PRI continues to lose support in state elections it could struggle to remain as a significant political force.

In Yucatan, opinon polls have given a ten point lead to the opposition candidate Patricio Patron who represents a coalition against the PRI.

The BBC correspondent in Mexico City says the elections are also being marred by allegations of vote buying.
