Dozens injured in Israel match stampede
Wounded at Israeli stadium in Haifa
The match was nearing the end when the stampede occurred
At least 30 people have been injured after fans rushed the field at the end of a championship football match in the northern Israeli port of Haifa.

Two of the injuries were serious, a spokesman for the national Magen David Adom ambulance service said.

Haifa police spokesman Yehuda Maman said that police had opened the gates at the Kiryat Eliezer stadium to prevent people from being crushed.

The stampede occurred eight minutes before the end of the national championship match between Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

African tragedies

Haifa was leading 3-2, but the match was not completed.

It was not clear how the result would be determined.

The stampede comes on the heels of three serious incidents at stadiums in Africa.

In Ghana, 126 people were killed at a football stadium earlier this month, while South Africa and Congo saw similar tragedies in April.

Two people were killed in Iran when a stadium collapsed there this month.
