Haiti's former military ruler arrested

The former military ruler of Haiti, Prosper Avril, has been arrested at a restaurant in the capital, Port-au-Prince, while signing copies of one of his books.

His son said General Avril had been accused of involvement in a plot against state security.

General Avril came to power in 1988 in a military coup, but two years later was sent into exile in the United States by Haiti's democratic opposition.

He returned to Haiti in the 1990's after Haitian officials brought legal complaints against him in the US, accusing him of torture and kidnapping.
