| In the former Soviet republic of Georgia opposition activists have clashed with police and government supporters on the tenth anniversary of the country's independence. The fighting started during an unauthorised rally of hundreds of supporters of the former president Zviad Gamsakhurdia in the capital Tbilisi. At the same time the government of President Edouard Shevardnadze has been struggling to defuse an army mutiny. The BBC's Jane Bennett-Powell reports. |
