Ryanair plane tyres explode
![]() The Ryanair plane was detained in France for 24 hours
A Boeing 737 owned by Irish low-fare carrier Ryanair was held overnight in southern France after its tires exploded during landing.
According to the Associated Press news agency, the incident happened at the Carcassone-Salvaza airport on Thursday. None of the 124 passengers on board the flight from Belgium were injured when the planes four tyres exploded on impact. The plane was detained at the airport while technical engineers flew from Dublin with replacement tyres, according to airport vice president, Alfred Rispoli.
The cause of the incident was still unknown. "Investigators believe a rough, uneven landing may have put too much pressure on one tire, causing it to explode," said Mr Rispoli. "The three other tires might have given way under the extra weight." The airport was closed for about 16 hours while an aviation investigator spoke to the pilot and crew. Officials searched the runway but found no 'foreign object' on the plane's path, Rispoli said. A foreign object on the runway was believed to be one of the causes behind last year's Air France Concorde explosion in Paris. All 100 passengers, nine crew and four people on the ground were killed in the first fatal accident involving the supersonic aircraft since its launch in 1969. |
