Albright heads Peru monitors
The former American Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, has been appointed head of a multinational team monitoring the run-off of the presidential election in Peru on 3 June. The 35-member team will also include two former presidents - Costa Rica's Rodrigo Carazo and Ramiro de Leon from Guatemala. Opinion polls still suggest Alejandro Toledo may be heading for victory over the former President Alan Garcia. The Peruvian Ombudsman has called on the two candidates to raise the level of the electoral campaign following last week's mutual accusations by the two candidates on a televised debate.
