Oasis star wins Mirror damages

Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher has won an unspecified amount of damages from The Mirror after the newspaper falsely said he lied in court.

The paper will also apologise to the musician, said Gallagher's spokeswoman on Friday.

Gallagher and his lawyer Anthony Burton agreed to accept "substantial damages" in an out-of-court settlement after a Mirror story in January.

The story, headlined Noel - I Lied in Divorce, said the rock star had confessed to lying in court papers about an affair in order to get a fast divorce from his then wife, Meg Mathews.

Gallagher's spokeswoman said the Mirror had agreed to issue a statement correcting its mistake, as part of the court settlement.

The statement reads: "Noel Gallagher, in his divorce papers, makes it clear that the adultery alleged by his former wife Meg Mathews, took place after their separation.

"Yet in an article we published on January 19, 2001, we said that Noel had lied to the court in this respect.

"Noel's lawyer was concerned because he feared that the judge may throw the petition out and charge Noel with contempt of court.

Having been shown the divorce papers we can confirm that Noel always made it clear that the adultery took place after he separated from Meg Mathews and we accept that Noel would not and did not lie to the court."

The paper is due to print the statement of apology on Monday.

Gallagher and Mathews were granted a divorce in January. They have a daughter, Anais, who is almost 18 months old.

Oasis are currently touring the United States with the Black Crowes on The Tour of Brotherly Love.

Noel's brother Liam divorced from actress Patsy Kensit in September.
