Sudan facing worsening hunger

The United Nations' World Food Programme says the plight of up to three-million people left hungry by drought and conflict in Sudan continues to worsen.

The UN is warning that there could be famine within months if urgent help isn't given.

It says the ensuing famine could kill more people than any disaster in Sudan since the mid-1980s.

The World Food Programme says it needs one-hundred-and-thirty-five million dollars, but an appeal last November raised just one per cent of the target.

A BBC correspondent says the civil war between the Islamist government in Sudan and rebels in the south has gone on too long for many potential donor countries to care.
