A brain surgeon from a Sheffield hospital has been suspended after allegations of misconduct.

Jan Jakubowski, a neurosurgeon at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, was suspended from duty pending the results of an internal inquiry.

He is said to strongly deny the allegations.

Central Sheffield University Hospitals' NHS Trust confirmed a consultant had been suspended from the hospital while it awaited the results of the internal inquiry.

It said allegations of personal misconduct were to be investigated.

A spokesman said: "This is a non-disciplinary suspension, which is being investigated in accordance with the Trust's agreed policies and procedures.

"We are unable to comment further pending the outcome of the investigation."

Support

Mr Jakubowski has worked at the hospital for more than 20 years.

Surgical colleagues are supporting him, and are calling for him to continue working while the inquiry is carried out.

A spokesman for the Medical Protection Society, which is representing Mr Jakubowski said he was upset and disappointed by the suspension.

"He will co-operate fully with the investigation being carried out by the Trust in the hope that it can reach a speedy conclusion.

He added: "The Medical Protection Society will do everything possible to protect his reputation as a leading neurosurgeon and will endeavour to ensure he is able to return to his important work at the earliest opportunity."
