Asylum plea for hunted wolf
Wildlife conservation groups in Norway have asked Sweden to give political asylum to a wolf. The Norwegian government authorised the killing of ten wolves in February, saying they are causing serious damage to livestock. Despite widespread protests nine wolves have been killed so far, and hunters have got until April the Sixth to kill the lone survivor. There are fewer than one hundred grey wolves in Scandinavia. Swedish officials say more, not fewer, wolves are needed to sustain a healthy stock. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
