Tense confrontation over German nuclear transport

Anti-nuclear protesters near the north German town of Dannenberg have stopped a train transporting nuclear waste to a nearby storage site.

Some twenty demonstrators have cemented themselves to the rails which may now have to be removed.

A tense stand-off is meanwhile developing in Dannenberg where where up to four-thousand demonstrators have gathered to stop the transfer of the consignment to lorries for the final leg of the journey to the Gorleben storage site.

Police have used water cannon against the demonstrators and have themselves come under attack.

A BBC correspondent at the site says the authorities are determined to keep control at all costs, and thousands of officers have been deployed in Dannenberg.
