Clashes as nuclear train enters Germany

Police in Germany say they're prepared for further protests today, as thousands of anti-nuclear protestors attempt to block a controversial transport of reprocessed nuclear fuel.

The transport, which originated in France, is travelling across Germany to the Gorleben storage site in the north of the country. . During the night, police broke up a large demonstration in Dannenberg, where the nuclear waste is to be transferred to trucks for its final journey.

The authorities have mounted what's believed to be the largest police operation in Germany since the Second World War to ensure safe passage for the train.

Bridges and railway crossings have been closed, and more than fifteen-thousand police officers deployed along the route. The shipment of nuclear waste is the first to Gorleben since 1997, when the depot was shut on safety grounds after similar protests.
