Military forces in Macedonia

BBC News Online looks at the estimated military capabilities of forces engaged in the Macedonia conflict.

Active armed forces: 16,000 [7,000 professional soldiers, 8,000 conscripts, 1,000 HQ personnel]

Air force: 700 at most

Marine wing: 400

Army reserves: 60,000

Police: 7,500 [4,500 armed]

Conscripts: 30% Albanian; 10% Roma, Turks and other minorities.

Equipment:

98 main battle tanks (94 Soviet-designed T-55s imported from Bulgaria in 2000, and four T-34s)

51 utility vehicles (41 US "Humvees" and 10 ex-Yugoslav BRDM-2s)

112 armoured personnel carriers (only 40 believed to be in good condition). They include 60 BTR-70 ex-Yugoslav; 12 BTR-80 Bulgarian; 30 M-113A from the US; 10 Greek Leonidas

Heavy artillery: 76mm and 105mm guns of unknown quantity; at least 108 122mm M-30 guns; 85 128mm multiple rocket launchers [73 type M-71 and 12 type M-77]

Mortars: 16mm, 82mm, and 120mm

Nine river patrol boats

Aircraft: 10 UTVA-75s, four ZLIN-242s

Helicopters: four Mi-17s (one thought to be lost); two Soviet-designed Mi-24 helicopter gunships from Ukraine

50 air defence guns: 20mm and 40mm

30 SA-7 surface-to-air missiles

Lack of basic supplies, like first aid kits and radios

Ethnic Albanian rebels in Macedonia

Estimated manpower: 300- 700, though some estimates are as high as 2,000

Equipment: Light anti-tank weapons, Kalashnikov semi-automatic rifles, Chinese-made machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, sniper rifles and mortars

Exact figures not known. Analysts say the fighters are relatively well equipped for their numbers, and have the advantage of being highly mobile and motivated.
