Africa conflict summit in London

The British government is today organising a major conference aimed at developing a more effective international response to conflict resolution in Africa.

The conference, in London, brings together the United Nations, international financial institutions and government representatives from Europe and Africa.

Among the topics for discussion are the credibility of United Nations peacekeeping operations on the continent, and how to help countries in their post-conflict development.

The South African Defence Minister, Motsiou Lekhota, who will attend the meeting, has cautioned the international community against simply abandoning Africa to its problems.
