Shaimiyev wins Tatarstan polls
Results from the presidential elections in the Russian republic of Tatarstan on Sunday give the incumbent, Mintimer Shaimiyev, a convincing victory. The central elections commission told the Russian news agency, Tass, that with ninety-two percent of ballot papers counted, Mr Shaimiyev had nearly eighty per-cent of the vote. He had needed to take more than half the vote to win the election. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
