Mass grave discovery in Burundi
President Buyoya
Burundi peace talks have failed to halt the fighting
More than 200 bodies are reported to have now been found in mass graves in a suburb of the Burundi capital, Bujumbura.

Local officials said the bodies were found in Kinama - the scene of recent fighting between Hutu rebels and government forces

The Burundian army forced rebel guerrillas of the National Liberation Forces out of Kinama two weeks ago after it had been briefly occupied.

"Most of the bodies were of young men, some in military uniforms, along with a few women and children," an official told Reuters news agency.

The Burundian army said the fighting for Kinama, which lasted more than 10 days, left some 200 rebels and 20 soldiers dead.

Cholera

About 15 cases of cholera have been recorded in Kinama over the past few days.

Local officials said every day, two or three new cases of cholera were reported. They say the water supply had still not been restored there.

The army says clashes are still continuing in the hills above the capital.

A military source told the French news agency 30 rebels and two soldiers had been killed in the Gasarara, Mbare and Nyambuye districts.
